Description

The TTCN-3 User Conference (T3UC) is an annual event which brings together the TTCN-3 community, to see how the language is used in both industrial and research environments, to hear about future directions, to see the latest tools and to share experiences.

T3UC 2008 is co-organized by Métodos y Tecnología (MTP) Madrid and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and will feature tutorials and presentations from members of the TTCN-3 user community and other invited speakers.

Objective

TTCN-3 is a mature technology whose popularity is increasing rapidly. It is used in both small and large development projects and is seen by many as the key component of efficient and cost effective validation and testing. TTCN-3's use has extended beyond its established application of telecommunications testing into new areas such as embedded system testing and software testing in general.

The aim of this international conference is to bring together practitioners, vendors, and researchers in the field of testing software, communicating systems, embedded systems, etc. T3UC 2008 provides a full picture on TTCN-3: first-hand information on the practical use of the language, experiences, case studies, expectations and directions of future development and its place as the building block of integrated design and testing environments. It also presents the status of standardization, language features and tools availability.

Keynotes

TTCN3 Huawei experience

Abstract: Along with TTCN-3 standard continuous evolution after its initialisation, The research and development of TTCN-3 in Huawei have never been intermitted from 1999. GTR(General Test Runner), the universal development and execution platform of TTCN-3 in Huawei, has been widely applied in most of the product testing. This presentation gives a general introduction to the development and application of TTCN-3 in Huawei and summarize the experiences and lessons on using TTCN-3, and finally it will make you understand the reason why Huawei can support so many users in various telecom product testing.

Bio: Guolong Wang, Senior engineer of test tools development in Huawei. He has six years experience in test tools development and test automation. He has been project manager of GTR and was responsible for the TTCN-3 executor development. GTR now is the general TTCN-3 execution platform which supports most of the telecommunication product testing. He received bachelor degree from NWPU (Northwest polytechnical university, China) on aerospace technique in 1999 and Master degree in 2002.

Test programming at Microsoft

Abstract: Designing and interoperability testing of distributed, application-level network protocols is complex. Windows, for example, supports currently more than 200 protocols, ranging from simple protocols for email exchange to complex ones for distributed file replication or real time communication. At Microsoft, model programs, written in C#, are developed as high-level behavioral specifications of application-level network protocols and are used for Model Based Testing of protocol implementations. MBT is a cornerstone of the wider protocol quality assurance process methodology devised in the Windows organization. In this talk we provide an overview of the technology of model programs and look at some recent advances in research of various model program analysis techniques.

Bio: Margus Veanes is a researcher in the Foundations of Software Engineering group at Microsoft Research since 1999. His main research interests are in model-based software development, testing and verification. He is a co-designer and co-developer of the original Spec Explorer tool. The next generation Spec Explorer tool is being developed in the Windows organization. Margus is also a coordinator and developer of the open source NModel project and and a co-author of the book "Model-Based Software Testing and Analysis with C#", Cambridge University Press, 2008. Margus received his PhD from Uppsala University in Sweden in 1997 in the area of theorem proving and decision problems in first-order logic.

TTCN-3 in the testing universe

Abstract: TTCN-3 was developed as a test specification and implementation language, which is usable for every test kind, can be used on every platform, is suitable for every test phase, is integrated in every (test-) environment, and which executes automatically all the test cases. Together with model-based testing approaches, it can also serve as a backend for test infrastructures where test cases are also created automatically. That's the theory - but where do we stand in practise? This presentation reflects the current state of TTCN-3 with respect to the diverse test requirements. The presentation will give a subjective view on those fields, where TTCN-3 did not yet match the expectations. And it tries to give answers if there are ways to improve .

Bio: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ina Schieferdecker is heading the Competence Center Modelling and Testing for System and Service Solutions (MOTION). She is Professor on Engineering and Testing of Communication-Based Systems at Technical University Berlin since 2003. Prof. Schieferdecker works in the area of design, analysis, testing and evaluation of communication systems using specification-based techniques like UML (Unified Modelling Language), MSC (Message Sequence Charts) and TTCN-3 (Testing and Test Control Notation). Prof. Schieferdecker authored many scientific publications in the area of system engineering and testing. She is an active member in the standardization of TTCN-3 by ETSI.
