RIMSI: Energy Control System for Buildings

Country: Spain       Sector: R&D

Client Profile:

Acciona Infraestructuras is the end user of a project developed by ISIS and theUniversidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). Acciona is a pioneering company in contributing to the social well-being and sustainable development through their various activities: infrastructures, housing, logistical and transport services, urban and environmental services, and renewable energy.

Problem:

Acciona Infraestructuras needed an innovating system for controlling energy in their buildings which would offer the possibility of having various configurations and above all which could be easily installed.

Investigating, developing and innovating methods, techniques and tools which would improve energy consumption were intended through this new energy control system. The objective of the system was basically to demonstrate how energy consumed in light and heat can be efficiently and effectively controlled, assuring that minimum operating requirements are met in the environment of the user in terms of the level of light and temperature by programming rules for controlling the energy in order to quickly optimize energy costs.

Strategy and Technology of the Solution:

In order to solve the existing problem the need to design and implement a solution using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) was proposed. The need to design a prototype in order to demonstrate the integration of wireless sensor network technology with actuator technology was suggested.

The prototype has both a hardware and software element. The hardware component was made up of a wireless sensor network with incorporated temperature, light and humidity sensors. Some sensors were also connected to micro-actuators connected to the lighting and heating system.

Benefits:
Implementing RIMSI in the pilot building of Acciona Infraestructuras has implied a series of benefits which are listed below and which in many cases go beyond the initial objectives of the project:
  • Savings, speed and reliability in the installation and configuration of this system in any building (new or existing) since it is a wireless solution.
  • Energy savings in buildings and therefore complying with current European legislation in force regarding the environment and enclosed spaces.
  • Flexibility in respect to changes in environmental requirements such as temperature, light and humidity. It is possible to easily replace the sensors in a simple manner as well as reprogram new environmental conditions.
  • Progressive maintenance: the number of nodes in the network can be easily enlarged and new sensors and actuators integrated.
  • Reprogramming the sensors through the wireless network, therefore it is possible to extend the functionality and the deployed system network without manipulating the installed sensors.
